People who work at the Alamo typically have a few things in common: They love history, they love Texas, and they love to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors from all over the world. Today, meet Misty Hurley, the Alamo’s Education Program Assistant.

Misty, what attracted you to work for the Alamo?

When I think of historic sites in Texas, The Alamo is at the top of the list. The 300 year history of this site is not only relevant here in this location but also important to the history of Texas, the United States, and the world.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing is that there is always something new to learn about The Alamo — more books to read, archaeology or preservation work uncovering exciting new things, new research, or visitors who come from all over the world and cause you look at the site in a new way.

What’s your favorite historical fact, figure, or story at the Alamo?

The history beyond the siege. The Battle of the Alamo and its repercussions are incredible and far reaching but many visitors have never considered why the site was here to begin with and what happened to it after the battle. There is some aspect in all those years of history that every visitor can connect to.

What’s your favorite place in San Antonio?

It may be cheesy but I really love the Mission Trail. Growing up, my family would day trip to San Antonio and visit all of the missions, so I have really great memories with my family at these sites. It still gives me goosebumps to visit them and think of the centuries of history, about how generations of Texans have worshiped in the churches, and the men who fought and lost their lives here, it’s just amazing.

Any tips for someone planning a visit to the Alamo?

Talk to the staff! We can tell you about the history, give you advice on what to see while you’re on site (all of it!), things to look for that many people miss, and give you some great advice on where to eat.
