Visitors to the Alamo on November 5 were able to experience a special First Saturday at the Alamo. Everyone was invited to enlist as a volunteer in the Alamo Company and take part in our militia muster.

Alamo staff and volunteers presented a School of the Soldier and demonstrated 19th century militia training.

In our Living History Encampment, visitors were able to learn about 19th century medical practices and try their hand at Chuck-a-Luck, an 1800s game of chance.

There were several activities for kids including a chance to make corn husk dolls and candy cartridges, a special School of the Soldier for kids, and letter writing using quill pens.

We also had a barber on site offering period shaves and haircuts. The Alamo’s COO even got in on the fun and was sporting some fun facial hair by the end of the day!

Join us on December 3 for our next First Saturday. This time we’ll be celebrating a Homemade Christmas with holiday arts and crafts, period games, storytelling and more.
