With the end of school and Memorial Day right around the corner, summer vacation is on many people’s minds. Here are a few tips to help with planning a trip to the Alamo this summer.
1. Keep the Weather in Mind
San Antonio is hot in the summer. There’s just no other way to put it. Average temperatures during the summer months are in the mid-90s and triple-digit temperatures are not unheard of. When planning a trip to the Alamo during this time of year, make sure to take the heat into account. Dress comfortably, wear sunscreen and/or a hat, and make sure to drink plenty of water.
2. Timing is Everything
Summer is a busy time at the Alamo. San Antonio is a popular vacation destination for Texans and non-Texans alike. Saturdays and holiday weekends tend to be especially busy. If possible, plan your stop at the Alamo for a weekday and you will experience much shorter lines. If a weekday visit is not possible, try for early in the morning as we tend to get busier as the day goes on.
3. The Church isn’t the Only Thing to See
The iconic Alamo Church is what most people have in mind when they think of the Alamo, but there’s much more to see and do. The historic Long Barrack houses our permanent museum exhibit, as well as a small theater where we show a short film on the 300 year history of the site. Check out the new, temporary exhibit Fortress Alamo: The Key to Texas in the Special Exhibition Hall. Also, don’t forget to stop by our Living History Encampment where you can watch and participate in demonstrations on life in 1830s Texas!
4. Book Tours Ahead of Time
Both our guided and audio tours can be booked online through our website. While tours can also be purchased on-site the day of your visit, space on the guided tour is limited and they do fill up during our busy season. Booking your tour ahead of time can ensure you get on the tour that you want.
