The theme for day three of Museum Week is music, so we are taking a look at five songs written about the Alamo and exploring the Alamo’s impact on pop culture.
- First up is local artist George Strait. King George mentions the Alamo in several songs, including the 2005 hit “If it Wasn’t for Texas.”
2. There’s also the legendary Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys who released “New San Antonio Rose” in 1940. Bob Wills and his western swing style of music is an inspiration for many of the musicians that play at the Alamo’s annual Fiddle Fest.
3. The bluegrass group Old and In the Way, whose members included Peter Rowan and Jerry Garcia (yes, that Jerry Garcia), recorded their “Midnight Moonlight” in 1975. The group’s self-titled album is one of the best selling bluegrass albums of all time.
4. Any list of Alamo music has to include the Academy Award nominated soundtrack to the 1960 version of “The Alamo” starring John Wayne. Composer Dimitri Tiompkin was nominated for awards for “Best Music, Original Song (The Green Leaves of Summer)” and for “Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.” The film’s soundtrack won the Golden Globe for “Best Original Score — Motion Picture” in 1961.
5. While the movie soundtrack contained a version of “The Ballad of the Alamo,” it was the Marty Robbins cover that a generation fell in love with.
Speaking of a generation in love, as a bonus, we leave you with a song guaranteed to get stuck in your head for days.
